This is a very good question. It is important to keep in mind that there will not be one right answer but only opinions. With that stated, here are my thoughts on the role of art in society.   As an illustrative and journalistic tool, art shocks and inspires us to action. What art depicts can illicit a visceral, almost cellular, reaction. These 5 TED talks that follow are a testament to the power of art to affect positive change, righting, addressing and vocalizing social injustice in the world. Shirin Neshat – Art in Exile.

Professors have roles, politicians have roles, speakers in debates have roles. No sooner do you clothe an artist in a role than he slips out of it and is . Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, sculpture, and paintings. The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics.

The art world is full of enterprising individuals, companies and not-for-profits, but has relatively few good examples of social enterprise. Some might make the case that a theatre company or a music label is a social enterprise in that it is creating and distributing products and generating a range of positive social benefits.   The role an artist plays in society is largely dependent on the personality of the artist and on that artist's chosen subject matter. An artist can lead, follow, uplift or provoke with their work. Art is often a reflection or extension of personality. Art is so versatile that the artist can take whatever role they wish, given the right art for.
